BETONG: The move to allow Gabungan Parti Sarawak MPs to join the Perikatan Nasional (PN) federal Cabinet is seen as an effort to save the country.

Hence, the youth wing of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), in particular, that of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), has praised the Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg for having come to the right decision.

“We applaud Abang Johari’s decision after looking at the importance of saving the country from further chaos,” said PBB youth chief, Gerald Rentap Jabu.

He observed that during the 21 months that Pakatan Harapan (PH) was the federal government, it was too political to the point of almost ignoring the development of the country.

“Now that the new federal government has been formed using the PN + GPS formula, the way is open for us to pursue and defend Sarawak’s rights and interests,” he said.

“Besides saving the country, we also want to focus on development including ensuring that proper attention is given to socio-economic stability.”

Rentap, who is also Layar assemblyman, spoke to reporters after opening GPS Layar Roadshow with the involvement of Kampung Melayu GPS branches. The ceremony was held at the local Chung Hua Hall, yesterday.

“I appeal to the grassroots leaders to properly convey GPS’ stand. GPS is not a component party of Perikatan Nasional. We are just a partner in the establishment of the new federal government.

“This means that if any of our MPs are appointed to hold office in the new government, we have a voice that will fight for Sarawak in Putrajaya. Let us pray for Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhiyyidin Yassin to continue to ensure that Malaysia continues to develop,” said Rentap.

It may be hoping against hope, but he is hopeful that the country’s political leaders would be mature enough to focus on national unity and overall development instead of engaging in endless political intrigue and vendetta.

He also claimed that many rural voters had also pledged their loyalty to ensure that Layar GPS in particular and Sarawak as a whole would continue to be strong.
