KUCHING: A local man who failed to pay a fine of RM10,000 for engaging in online gambling was today sentenced to four months’ jail.
Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azuran Wan Ali ordered Mohamad Zamberi Abdul Rahman, 26, to be detained in jail when he failed to pay the fine after pleading guilty under Section 4B (a) of the Open Gambling House Act 1953.
In admitting guilty of his crime, Mohamad Zamberi said he needed money after being fired from his job following the outbreak of Covid-19 pandemic.
The 26-year-old was found committing his crime at 12.01am in a house at Bandar Baru Samariang on March 12.
Also seized from him was a Vivo 1806 mobile phone used as a gambling device, a piece of paper containing a password and RM764 in cash.
He was arrested by police during Ops Dadu led by ASP Rozaiman Abdul Wahab.
