KUCHING: An Indonesian woman was sentenced to two months’ jail and fined RM100 by the Magistrate’s Court here today for stealing a bottle of cosmetic product worth RM73.50.
Maryati, 58, pleaded guilty to the charge under Section 380 of the Penal Code which was read in front of Zubaidah Sharkawi.
She allegedly committed the offence in a health and beauty care pharmacy at a prominent shopping centre at Jalan Simpang Tiga, here, at around 4.51 pm, Feb 1 this year.
Zubaidah ordered the accused to be jailed for a month if she failed to pay the fine.
According to the facts of the case, a female complainant who was the store manager checked the CCTV footage and found that the accused had opened the packaging of the cosmetic product.
The accused managed to take the product past the security control system at the main door of the premises without paying.
As a result of the incident, the premises suffered a loss of RM73.50.
A police report was made for further action to be taken, leading to the arrest of the accused on February 3.
The investigation found that the accused had stolen the cosmetic product based on the CCTV footage and according to an eye witness who saw the accused commit the crime..
The prosecution of the case was handled by Prosecuting Officer Inspector Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin while the accused was not represented by a legal counsel
