KAPIT :  Bukit Goram State Assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit Unyat during his recent walk-about  in his constituency   visited one of the villages at Genturon Pelajau Jaya, Sungai Pelajau, Jalan Bukit Goram here.

The purpose of his visit was to inspect the concrete bridge at Genturong Pelajau Jaya which provided a vital link to the main road,Jalan Bukit Goram, here.

The concrete bridge built across a stream was at the risk of collapsing following severe soil erosion at the river bank below the bridge, The erosion was caused by excessive rainfall coupled with the huge volumes of  water flowing down from the upper slopes.

During the inspection, Tuai Rumah Lult Achang gave a brief account of the Kampung Genturong Pelajau Jaya profile.

He explained that the concrete bridge was constructed some two decades ago by the Public Works Department .

“As temporary measure, the Village Development and Security Committee (JKKK) has carried out a “gotong royong” (mutual assist) propgramme recently to clear the blocked stream and ensure a free flow of water and  to resurface part of the collapsed bridge. However, this is only a temporary measure. We appeal to our elected representative, Jamit to help us to solve this problem,” he said.

Jamit later told the press that he had instructed a contractor to reinforce the footing and take preventive action to prevent further soil erosion.

“For the long term measure, I need to discuss with the Public Works Department how best to overcome the problem. One of the options I am now looking into is to build an iron bridge here,” he said.
