KAPIT: Bukit Goram assemblyman Jefferson Jamit Unyat officiated at a Hari Raya gathering held at the compound of Masjid Jabal An-Nur here recently.
The function, jointly organised by Jawatankuasa Tetap Perayaan Islam Bahagian Kapit and Lembaga Amanah Khairat Kapit, attracted almost 1,000 Muslim and non-Muslim guests.
In his speech, Jamit congratulated Haji Wasli Nor on being appointed as the first Muslim Temenggong in Kapit. He explained prior to the appointment; the most senior Muslim community was Pemanca.
“The dream of having a Muslim Temenggong is finally fulfilled because of the close co-operation between the Muslim community here and the elected people’s representatives. We (YBs) supported the request from the Muslim community.
“Now, the Muslims here have two Ketua Kampung, one Penghulu and one Temenggong. The post of Pemanca, left vacant after Wasli was appointed Temenggong, will be filled later,” said Jamit.
“Tonight, this Ramah Tamah is very significant not only as a crowd puller but also because many stalls are exhibiting many halal delicacies like kek lapis, laksa Johor and laksa Penang.
“We are living in a multi-racial society with not less than 35 ethnic groups in the country. We must, at all costs, uphold moderation and tolerance, constantly reminding ourselves to respect and tolerate other’s ways of religious and social practices,” stressed Jamit.
“It is only when there is peace, stability, harmony, tolerance, mutual understanding and co-operation between one another that the nation is able to move forward and the people can benefit and progress.”
Later at the function, he announced a government grant of RM6,000 for Jawatankuasa Perayaan Islam Bahagian Kapit.
