KUCHING: The Japan-Malaysia Association (JMA) has set an ambitious target of planting over one million trees in Sarawak this year.
The initiative was announced by JMA’s vice chairman Haruko Arimura following a courtesy visit to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg here today (Aug 20).
She said JMA will go into the rainforest and plant trees, adding that this is their effort to encourage actions that are beneficial not only to Sarawak but also to the entire country.
“This is also to foster good relations between Malaysia and Japan, as well as to build the capacity of the younger generation to highlight the importance of rainforest restoration,” she said.
In a separate meeting, Abang Johari also received a courtesy visit from the Sarawak Chinese Association (SCA), led by Miri Mayor Adam Yii.
After the visit, Yii shared that the purpose of their meeting was to invite the Premier to officiate at the upcoming Taste of Borneo Carnival, slated for Oct 30 to Nov 10 in Miri.
“This unique event will involve more than 20 ethnic groups in Miri and is not just about food; it also encompasses various aspects of culture.
“It is one of the ways we aim to unite all ethnic groups through food and cultural exchanges,” he said.
