KUCHING: The Japanese Film Festival (JFF) 2024 is set to return for its 12th edition, running from Oct 10-13 at GSC CityONE Megamall here.

It will showcase over 12 diverse films with drama, sci-fi, romance, thriller, and animation genres.

Anime enthusiasts won’t want to miss iconic titles like the 1988 classic “Akira” by Otomo Katsuhiro and “Sand Land” (2023) by the late Toriyama Akira, creator of Dragon Ball.

The festival will also showcase captivating new releases, including “Matched” (2024), “All the Long Nights” (2024) by Miyake Sho, who appeared at last year’s JFF opening, and “A Samurai in Time” (2024), released in Japan on Aug 17, each offering unique insights into contemporary Japanese life and culture.

As part of the collaboration between the Japanese Film Festival (JFF) and What About Kuching (WAK) 2024, the upcoming What About Music (WAM): Home & Away performance on Oct 6 will showcase an exciting lineup of Sarawakian bands.

A highlight of the event is a special collaboration between the Japanese exotic band MuchaMuchaM and Sarawakian artist Zee Avi.

The 2024 festival kicked off on Sept 10 at the Aurum Theatre, The Exchange, TRX, with the Malaysian premiere of “Godzilla Minus One ” (2023), directed by Yamazaki Takashi and winner of Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards, offering a fresh take on the Godzilla franchise.

To celebrate its 20th anniversary, The Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur, organised a five -day filmmaking workshop for Malaysian and Japanese youths, led by director Lim Kah Wai, where participants created short films will be showcased on the JFKL YouTube channel @TheJapanFoundationKL.

JFF 2024 screenings will run from October 10 to 13 at GSC CityONE Megamall, while WAM: Home and Away will take place on Oct 6 at Tribes, Grand Margherita.
