KUCHING: Sarawak’s top civil servant Datuk Amar Jaul Samion has called it a day – after more than 42 years in the civil service.
He officially retired as the State Secretary effective Thursday (June 30).
Deputy State Secretary (Economic Planning and Development) Datuk Seri Mohamad Abu Bakar Marzuki, who is currently the Acting State Secretary, moves up to fill the vacancy.
Jaul, 64, has held the post since Aug 22, 2019. He was the second Iban to hold the position.
The Sarawak Public Communications Unit (UKAS) reported that Jaul handed over his duties to Abu Bakar in a brief ceremony at Wisma Bapa Malaysia Thursday.
Also present at the ceremony were Deputy State Secretary (Administration) Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik and directors from other units under the Sarawak Premier’s Department.
At the same time, Jaul also witnessed the handing over of duties of the Immigration and Labour Management Unit (ILMU) from the Administration Unit to the director of ILMU, Jack Meredu Ko.
ILMU is an inspiration of Jaul and was established on Oct 28, 2021. Its role is to facilitate and regulate the control of the entry of foreigners into Sarawak to improve security and safeguard the interests of the state.
The objective of ILMU is to strengthen the capabilities of the state to design and implement effective labour and immigration policies, programmes and administrative processes to maximise the positive impacts of foreign labour force, investments and businesses from across the country and overseas to promote economic growth of the state.
At the same time, the unit plays an active role to ensure effective control of the entry of foreigners and non-Sarawak residents.
Prior to holding the position of State Secretary, Jaul was the Deputy State Secretary (Rural Transformation) from Aug 8, 2016 to May 16, 2019 before acting as the State Secretary from May 17 to Aug 21, 2019.
