KUCHING: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has urged Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs) to serve as collection centres for Petronas Dagangan Berhad’s (PDB) Used Cooking Oil Collection Programme.

This programme, a collaboration between the Ministry of Plantation and Commodity and PDB, aims to raise community awareness about the importance of recycling used cooking oil to protect the environment and create additional income opportunities for households.

Given the limited number of collection centres in Sarawak, with only one in Kuching and one in Miri, Fadillah, who is also Minister of Plantation and Commodities, said having local JKKKs as collection centres would be of convenience for residents to participate in the programme.

“Petronas is purchasing used cooking oil at RM2.50 per kilogram, which will provide an additional income source for those participating.

“However, considering the time it takes to collect 1 kilogram individually, I recommend a collective approach. This not only streamlines the process but also raises funds for JKKKs to organise programmes and enhance their area.

“These funds can benefit residents if directed by JKKKs to aid the community. Thus, the programme not only boosts income but also contributes to maintaining a clean and sustainable environment,” he said.

He made these remarks while officiating at the Used Cooking Oil Collection Programme in conjunction with Sarawak Zone Commodity Track at Kampung Tunku Community Hall, Petra Jaya today (Nov 25).

On the programme, Fadillah said the nationwide programme is targeting a collection of 90,000 kilograms of used cooking oil with the participation of 6,000 people by the end of December this year.

“Several Petronas gas stations have been selected as Used Cooking Oil Collection Centres to make it easier for people to send and sell used cooking oil.

“In Sarawak there are two Petronas gas station locations involved, namely the Petronas Astana Station in Kuching, and the Petronas Desa Senadin station in Miri,” he said.

Also present were Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Law, MA63, State-Federal Relations) Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed; Satok assemblyman Datuk Ibrahim Baki and chief political secretary to the Premier Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman; and Kuching North City Council (DBKU) mayor Hilmy Othman.
