BETONG: The village security and development committees (JKKKs) in Sarawak have been given the green light to implement rural transformation projects worth up to RM200,000.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said such projects must be implemented on gotong-royong basis or through a registered contractor.

“The state cabinet at its recent meeting has decided to allow JKKKs to implement their own projects. This will help to empower the committee to monitor the implementation of especially the less technical projects,” he said during a meeting with the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) members at the Spaoh Community Hall on Sunday.

To assist the committee, he said agencies such as the Public Works Department or the Drainage Irrigation Department would prepare the Bill of Quantities (BQ).

Uggah said with the BQ, JKKKs can lay out their project and materials specifications, construction scheduling, costing, etc by themselves.

“I hope JKKKs can be able to monitor the project implementation to completion,” he added.

On the upcoming state election, Uggah who is also Bukit Saban assemblyman believed that the people here would remain staunch supporters of GPS.

“I believe that the people will continue to support GPS because of its people-oriented and rural development policies.

“I don’t think that the people will accept Parti Sarawak Bersatu and Parti Keadilan Rakyat and I believe both opposition parties are eyeing the seat,” he added.
