KUCHING: A 53-year-old jobless father of six committed suicide on Monday afternoon by drinking weedkiller.
Chai See Hoi from Kampung Siburan, Mile 17, Kuching-Serian Road was said to be angry over something in the house.
Although he chased his wife and children out of the house, they remained in the sitting room.
Chai then went out of the house before returning with a bottle of weedkiller. He then locked himself in his room before drinking the poison at 2pm.
His family pleaded with him not to take the weedkiller but he failed to pay heed to their appeals.
Five minutes later, Chai vomited and his wife called one of his friends for help.
The friend rushed Chai to the Sarawak Heart Centre at Kota Samarahan. However, he was confirmed dead at 3.50pm.
Chai’s remains were brought to the Sarawak General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem.
It was not known why he committed suicide. His wife said he seemed depressed for quite some time.
Chai leaves behind his wife and six children, four of whom are working in Singapore.
Padawan District police chief Aidil Bolhassan, confirmed the case and said police were still investigating it.
The case, he added, had been classified as sudden death.
Aidil said a report on the incident had been received from Chai’s wife.
