BAU: More than 300 job seekers thronged the Dewan Masyarakat Siniawan here to register for jobs offered at a career carnival yesterday.
Twenty companies including four from Peninsular Malaysia offering a total of 1,761 jobs (vacancies) participated in the one-day carnival, the second to be held in Puncak Borneo constituency.
The carnival was organised by the State Manpower Department.
Of the total 1,761 vacancies, 20 were for university graduates, while the rest for non-graduates. Job applicants also attended on-the-spot interviews.
Puncak Borneo MP Willie Mongin visited the carnival yesterday and was briefed by officers from the State Manpower Department.
Later when met by reporters, Willie said the carnival was to provide a platform for job seekers to apply for jobs offered by various companies and agencies.
“This is one of the ways our government is assisting our youths, unemployed graduates and school leavers to seek employment,” he added.
He urged youths to take the opportunities at such carnivals.
He also advised job seekers not to be choosy in accepting their first job, adding that from the first job they would gain the necessary experience and skills to look for a better job.
He assured that the career carnival would be an annual affair in his Puncak Borneo constituency.
Prior to this, similar career carnivals were held at several locations including Mukah, Lawas, Kuching, Bintulu and UTC Sarawak (Kuching), attracting some 2,500 job seekers of whom 583 have been offered jobs.
Meanwhile the State Manpower Department in a statement yesterday said the Program Jelajah Kerjaya would be held from August 14 to19 in Kota Samarahan, Betong, Sibu and Miri.
