KUCHING: Members of the public can still enter Reservoir Park but they are advised to be on the lookout for stray dogs.

Stating this yesterday, Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) mayor Datuk Abdul Wahap Abang Julai said DBKU is not discounting that there may be more strays in the park that have been playing hide and seek with the catchers.

“Originally, we thought there were only five strays in the area but to date we have caught nine dogs there. There may be more, so my advice to those who cannot help going to the park to be on constant alert,” he told a press conference after the MoU signing ceremony with three parties at DBKU Library, Islamic Complex, Majma Mall.

According to him, one of the nine strays caught has been tested positive for rabies while the results for the other eight are still with the Veterinary Department.

On the challenges facing the catchers, he appealed to animal lovers not to release trapped dogs out of pity.

“Rabies is serious business, we can’t afford to let rabid dogs run free, so please give us your cooperation. It’s for the general good,” he said.

Abdul Wahap also DBKU welcomes members of the public to take photographs of any strays and send these “to us via WhatsApp as it will be easier for us to identify the dogs and take further action”.

He went on to say that the park will be officially open to the public on Saturday.

“In the meantime, the park may be used by joggers as the traps set up by the dog catchers are far from the tracks. Just be careful,” he added.
