KUCHING: The Rotary Club of Sarikei and Malaysian Medical Association (Sarikei Sub-branch) jointly organised a medical screening camp at Rumah Abas, Sungai Sian Bintangor, recently.
It was the first camp conducted this year for both MMA and Rotary Club Sarikei. Last year two camps were held.
The organisers have planned to hold a few more activities this year depending on the availability of funds and also on invitation.
The aim of the camp is to reach out to communities having difficulties getting healthcare and also to help in the prevention of diseases through early detection methods and also medical education.
Rotary Club of Sarikei complements and supports the activities of its existing healthcare services by maximising health coverage and accessibility.
It is also an opportunity for the members to experience the lifestyles of the rural folks and understand their needs.
The camp which involved doctors from Sibu and Sarikei included a specialist where 56 patients were screened with quite a number of them having high blood pressure, diabetes and cataracts.
A dental team from Bintangor Health Clinic also carried out dental screening.
They urged the people to take care of their teeth especially among young children. Brush their teeth regularly, maintain oral hygiene and also reduce their sugar intake. Twenty-three people were screened with several tooth extractions conducted.
MMA Sarikei also urged the people to take their medicines regularly and correctly.
The people were also told to drink powdered milk instead of condensed milk for healthy bones.
Also present were Assistant Governor for Rotary District 3310, Madam Dolly Yeap and District Governor, Michael Yee Yik Fah.
Yeap was impressed by the project and hoped that more of such projects can be held as they are beneficial to the community.
