KUCHING: A joint education taskforce committee comprising Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) launched a solid waste education and recycling awareness programme with a primary school SK Taba Sait to cultivate awareness of environmental sustainability.

According to MPP deputy chairman Dato Ahmad Ibrahim, MPP is aware that the solid waste management and environmental management is nothing new, but it is the main agenda for MPP to enhance the public awareness of the matter and their responsibility as a community in preserving the environment.

“The practice of recycling and maintaining cleanliness of our living area should start from our own, and we must educate and nurture our children to do the same at home and in school.

“It must be not for profit only; it must be driven by the will and desire to protect the environment and preserving nature,” said Ahmad when officiating at the Trienekens and MPP Joint Solid Waste Segregation and Recycling Education Programme held at SK Taba Sait, held in Bengoh Resettlement Scheme, yesterday.

He added the next generation deserves to enjoy a better environment and the effort have to start now. Ahmad also noted that SK Taba Sait also is the pioneer for the project (Solid Waste Segregation and Recycling Education Programme) which started in 2012.

“For this, I would like to congratulate the project committee for their effort to plan, introduce and implementing the project in primary school level,” he said, adding parents and the surrounding community should actively organise more of such projects for the betterment of all. Ahmad also hoped that the programme would be extended to secondary school and also university in the future.

Earlier on, Trienekens Division Manager for Environment R&D Dayang Sherrynazra Awang Sharkawi said the programme is organised to introduce the 3R concept (reduce, reuse, recycle). She said it is also to cultivate the habit of recycling among the primary school students within the learning environment. “As a start, this year we have been running two waste collections and managed to collect and recycle about 52 kilogrammes of waste.

“What is mportant is this amount of waste can be translated into saving invaluable natural and financial resources, at the same time increasing the awareness of reducing wastage,” said Dayang. She also pointed that the success of the programme started from the early understanding on recycling, not for profit, but to create the strong awareness of the matter in schools, offices and also at home.

“We are confident that in the long run, the schools will open up a way towards a positive change in terms of attitude, behaviour and also good recycling practices,” she said. Also present were SK Taba Sait headmaster Jamesom Simod.
