KUCHING: The Magistrate’s Court here sentenced a local man to 10 months in prison for possessing 0.05g of methamphetamine in addition to being involved in substance abuse.
Sopian, 36, pleaded guilty before Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Alwi to two charges framed under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
On the first count, he was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act, with possessing 0.05g of methamphetamine three months ago.
Sopian was also charged under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act, with abusing methamphetamine and amphetamine drugs.
Syarifah sentenced Sopian to six months in prison for the first charge and 10 months for the second charge.
The court ordered both sentences to run concurrently starting today (July 17).
According to the case facts, a police team arrested Sopian on suspicion of being involved in drug-related activities in a house at Kampung Semerah Padi around 11.20am on May 5.
Further inspections led to the finding of a straw tube containing crystalline lumps believed to be methamphetamine, kept in his sling bag in a room.
A chemist’s report later confirmed that the substance was indeed methamphetamine weighing 0.05g.
Sopian’s urine test also tested positive for methamphetamine and amphetamine.
