KUCHING: There is no need to emphasise the importance or superiority of one language over another, said Movement of Change Sarawak (MoCS).
“Just speak like a human being in a language understood by your fellow humans. That is a hallmark of a great leader.
“This is one reason why I miss the late (Datuk Patinggi) Adenan Satem. He speaks from the heart and for Sarawakians. Best of all, from his very own ‘Bahasa Sarawak’ or ‘Bahasa Rojak’ — a mix of bazaar Malay, everyday Iban and a spattering of the Hokkien dialect,” said MoCS leader Francis Siah.
He said everyone, from kids to grandpas and grannies, to those who have never been to school and to those who have attained the highest education, understood Adenan.
“A few days ago, I ticked off incoming PM (Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim for insisting that Bahasa Melayu be the official language at all government events and at press conferences.
“Anwar, just watch this (video of Adenan delivering his speech) and hear how Adenan spoke to his fellow Sarawakians (and even in front of [then] Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife),” he added.
Siah said the humility, sincerity and goodwill through his simple lingo had endeared many to Adenan, adding all present at his official functions were eagerly waiting for the chief minister to speak.
“Adenan was never a great man or a great leader. He did not build the longest bridge or the tallest building in Sarawak. He was simply a great Sarawakian, a good friend and a much-loved brother to all.
“That is his only legacy and that is enough. That is an inscription in the hearts of all who came to know and love him. Adenan needed no giant monument erected in his honour and memory to be revered and remembered by all.
“With much love and gratitude, rest well, dear brother Adenan,” Siah said.
