SARATOK: Kalaka assemblyman Mohamad Duri has urged the public to remove the stigma of solely relying on the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) in the event of a fire.

He stressed the importance of owning a fire extinguisher as a proactive measure.

According to him, today’s society tends to think of Bomba as the only solution when it comes to fires, given their complete dependence on the department.

“The public need to be aware of the importance of having fire extinguishers so that they don’t just rely entirely on Bomba.

“When waiting for Bomba to respond, there can be a significant time delay, and they may not be able to save property from a fire that initially started as a small fire (before it spreads).

“Because of this, the responsibility to protect lives and property is not solely on the security personnel but also on us.

“And the solution is the use of fire extinguishers, which anyone can use to put out fires, including five-year-old children if they are taught fire safety and the proper use of extinguishers.”

Mohamad made these remarks during the Fire Safety Awareness Programme and the 7th anniversary of Rumah Dom Brues Michael Gomes longhouse Women’s Bureau.

He pointed out that the community should not solely blame Bomba if they arrive late or if there are issues with water pressure.

“But what do we do to prevent fires? I like to remind the women folk, since many fire cases are recorded in kitchens.

“What is important, avoid leaving the kitchen while cooking, always supervise and check food cooked with devices such as ovens.
“In addition, avoid cooking if you are sleepy, dizzy or after taking medicine that can cause drowsiness.”

He reiterated the need for community fire brigades to be established in villages or longhouses.
Mohamad believes that fire safety awareness is essential for longhouse residents, and educating them on firefighting skills can help prevent fires from spreading and becoming more significant.
Saratok Bomba chief Putra Ila was also present during the event.
