KUCHING: Kampung Telaga Air is capable of producing quality petanque players based on commitment shown by the local community.

Utility (Water Supply) Assistant Minister Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said the presence of several petanque courts in the village proved their dedication.

“With such commitment, we believe that Kampung Telaga Air will give rise to a petanque player who can represent Sarawak like a footballer who was born here before,” he said at the Pantai Damai Youth Sports Carnival 2020 here Sunday.

Rahman, who is also the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) Assistant Minister, added that continuous promotion should be made to ensure that petanque can attract interest from all the communities.

“We want the sport to be embraced by all walks of life. This is because it is easy to play and does not require big expenses,” he said.

He praised the commitment shown by the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) Youth Movement for organising the sports carnival.

“Carnivals like this are important to foster friendship among the younger generation to uncover new talents,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Santubong B team emerged as winners of the petanque tournament held in conjunction with the Youth Sports Carnival after defeating Santubong E.

A total of 32 teams from Pantai Damai constituency took part in the competition, besides competitions like sepak takraw and futsal.

Also present were Pantai Damai PBB branch vice chief Rasli Eli and Pantai Damai PBB youth chief Sebeki Jen.
