KUCHING: ‘Kanang Anak Langkau’ movie is recognised with the ASEAN Spirit Award during the Asean International Film Festival Awards (AIFFA) Gala Night held at Pullman Hotel here on Saturday night.
The film, produced by Tangan Seni Sdn Bhd, tells a story of an Iban ranger (the late Datuk Kanang anak Langkau) who fought during the Communist insurgency era.
Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas handed over the award to the Executive Producer of the Tangan Seni, Zainal Fikri and film director Bade Azmi and the film crew.
Meanwhile, Donnie Yen, who is famous for his lead role in the Ip Man film series, received the ASEAN Inspiration Award while long-time Malay film director Tan Sri Lakshmanan Krishnan, received the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Lakshmanan is now 94 years old while Yen turns 35 this year.
Both awards were handed to the respective recipients by Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Haji Johari Tun Openg.
Meanwhile, many of the awards were won films from the Philippines.
The Best Film Award went to the Way Station from Vietnam which also won the Best Director of Photography Award and Best Actor Award (Pham Hoang Phuoc).
The Special Jury Award 1 and 2 were respectively awarded to Solo and Ziarah: Tales of the Otherworlds, both films coming from Indonesia.
Films from the Philippines won Best Film Editing (Imbisibol), Special Honour Award to Lav Diaz, Best Supporting Actress (Ana Capri from Laut), Best Supporting Actor (Ricky Davao from Dayang Asu), Best Actress (Ai Ai Delas Alas from Area) and Best Director (Luisito Ignacio from Area).
The evening also saw the appearances of many big and fresh talents such as Ella, Judika, Zainal Abidin, Fazura and Jason Dy as well as the world’s funniest man Harith Iskander.
