SIBU: The Kanowit Waterfront is the first in the region to feature a double-decker design, according to Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
He expressed his gratitude to the local representatives, including Kanowit MP Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang, Machan assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong, and Ngemah assemblyman Anyi Jana, for their support in the project.
He also acknowledged the Kanowit District Council for playing a crucial role in ensuring the project was completed on schedule despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“The Kanowit Waterfront is unique, being the only one with a double-decker design. This is my first time visiting the upper leve and it offers a distinctly different experience from the ground floor.
“This waterfront is more than just a landmark for Kanowit—it’s a space where the community can gather and celebrate important events,” he said.
Dr Sim, who is also the Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, said this at a press conference held in conjunction with the opening ceremony of the Kanowit Waterfront and Pesta Kanowit today (Sept 20).
He also pointed out that Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg had developed numerous waterfronts across Sarawak not only to provide gathering spaces but also to promote inclusivity.
“This demonstrates that, whether in urban or rural areas, towns or cities, everyone has access to the same high-quality facilities, even if the designs differ. That’s what inclusivity means and it’s what Sarawak stands for,” he emphasised.
Dr Sim also said that the main event of Pesta Kanowit was the powerboat racing competition, typically held at the waterfront.
Therefore, he said that he would help to propose the construction of a crane near the waterfront to help place the powerboats into the river.
“Perhaps we can include it under Projek Rakyat as it would be implemented faster compared to other projects,” he added.
Meanwhile, Minister of National Unity Datuk Seri Aaron Ago Dagang highlighted that the Kanowit Waterfront was built at a cost of RM5.3 million.
“If we were to build it today, the cost could easily be double. We are grateful to the contractor for completing the project on time.
“This waterfront has become a source of pride for all of us here in Kanowit,” he added.
The Kanowit Waterfront project was completed in April last year.
