KAPIT : Kapit District Officer, Elvis Didit disclosed that the “Chap Goh Mei 2017” celebration for Kapit District scheduled to take place on 8 March had been postponed to 11 March.
The venue remains the same; it is Dewan Sri Baleh here.
The celebration had been postponed due to some unforeseen circumstances, said Elvis.
He explained that teh “Chap Goh Mei” (15th day of the Chinese New Year) celebration was initiated by the government with the theme “Sarawak celebrates”.
Sarawak celebrates four main celebrations, namely, Chinese New Year/Chap Goh Mei (Chinese), Gawai Dayak (Dayak), Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Muslim) and Christmas (Christian) respectively.
“All these four celebrations must be celebrated in all the 40 Districts in the state headed by the respective District Officer”, added Elvis while chairing a committee meeting held at the conference room the State Office Complex at Jalan Bleteh here earlier on.
“Although the government initiates the festive celebrations, the funding is very limited.
“Hence for this “Chap Goh Mei” celebration, the Chinese community leaders need to come out with funding.
“Discuss among yourself how to get the fund. For this meeting, I don’t call the Chinese community leaders only. It also involves all the community leaders (including the Iban and Malay) so that they know about it.
“You have chosen Bukit Goram State Assemblyman, Jefferson Jamit to be the guest of honour.”
The committee has appointed Temenggong Tan Kian Hoo and the other Chinese community leaders to organise the event.
Present at the meeting were Administrative Officer, Robert Anyaw, Chief Clerk in Kapit District Office, James Sandak, ASP Chew Swoi Kee, ASP Chua Su Hua, Secretary of Kapit District Council, Jabang Juntan and several representatives of the various government departments.
