KAPIT: Members of the public have been urged not to believe everything circulating on social media, as misinformation has the potential to disrupt public harmony.

Political secretary to the Premier, Watson Awan Jalai, stressed the importance of valuing the contributions and sacrifices of past leaders while maintaining the independence Malaysia has enjoyed for 67 years.

“As Malaysian citizens, we should be free physically and mentally from any form of colonisation and always strive to strengthen relationships as a social responsibility of living in unity within our diverse ethnic groups.

“Do not ask what Malaysia can give you; instead, ask what you can give for the prosperity of the nation,” he said.

He also urged citizens to focus on contributing to the nation’s prosperity.

Watson reminded the public to uphold and respect the Malaysia Agreement 1963, which forms the foundation of the country’s unity, and not to question the celebrations of National Day, Sarawak Day, or Malaysia Day.

He highlighted how national unity was prominently displayed during the 2024 Sarawak-hosted Malaysia Games (SUKMA XXI), which brought Malaysians together under the slogans ‘Segulai Sejalai’ and ‘Agi Idup Agi Ngelaban’.

He was speaking during the launch of the Kapit district-level Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang (KMJG) convoy recently.

Chief assistant director of Communication Services and Community Development, Sarawak Information Department (JAPEN), Roszilawati Nor Aziz, echoed this sentiment, describing patriotic programmes and national activities as essential in fostering love for the country.

“These activities ignite patriotic spirit, encouraging the public to safeguard our nation’s well-being, which is one of the main missions of this convoy,” she said.

Roszilawati added that with the Jalur Gemilang and patriotic songs broadcast on electronic media, it signals the celebration of National Month, stressing this spirit must be instilled in the younger generation so they understand the meaning of independence and the unity slogan ‘Segulai Sejalai’.

She also encouraged active participation in the “1 House, 1 Jalur Gemilang” campaign.

Roszilawati also announced that starting January 1, 2025, social media platforms will be licensed and regulated to address issues such as cyberbullying, cybercrime, and other social problems.

Earlier, the JAPEN Kapit District organised the Jalinan Insan Wahana Inspirasi (JIWA) Komuniti@DUN and JIWA Komuniti@Merdeka programmes at the Manok Manchal Longhouse.

The events are aimed at spreading awareness on government policies, initiatives, and the significance of Malaysia’s independence, with talks from agencies such as the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (Bomba).
