KAPIT: Police arrested eight locals for allegedly engaging in a cockfighting session in an open area at Jalan Antaroh here last Saturday (April 1).
Acting police chief Anthony Apui said the raid codenamed ‘Ops Dadu’ was carried out following a public tip-off around 3.30 pm.
When the cops arrived, they noticed the suspects were in the middle of the activity near a cemetery.
“When they realised the presence of the police, they attempted to flee to a forest nearby.
“However, their freedom were short-lived as the police were quick to round up the suspects, aged between 19 and 52 years,” he said.
Police seized six live cockerels, two dead birds, a white board with betting numbers, a canvas, a weighing scale and a marker.
Anthony said the case is being investigated under Section 3(1) of the Cruelty to Animals (Prevention) Ordinance 1962, which carries a fine or a jail term, upon conviction.
