KAPIT: The Kapit Music Society successfully organised a Chinese New Year gathering held at Happy Garden Restaurant along Jalan Bletih here on Thursday evening.
The organising chairman Gabriel Chieng, who is the assistant secretary of Kapit Music Society, in a brief remark welcomed all members and pressmen to the function.
He said that this was a “two-in-one function” to celebrate Chinese New Year and Chap Goh Mei and as a gesture of appreciation to the organising committee for their success in organising the 25th Sarawak Inter-Divisions Secondary Students and 16th Primary School Pupils Mandarin Singing Competitions held from Dec 13 to 15 last year at the Kapit Civic Centre.
“The Chinese New Year celebration lasts fifteen days until Chap Goh Mei, also known as Chinese Valentine’s Day.
“Today is Valentine’s Day according to the Western calendar. I wish all couples and young lovers a ‘Memorable Day’.
“Comparatively, Kapit Music Society is a very small society in terms of membership and in addition we are also facing acute shortage of finance and manpower, but we managed to organise the activities successfully.
“We overcame all the challenges and were able to successfully organise the state-level singing competitions. Despite all the odds, we did it,” he said.
The highlight of the evening was the presentation of gifts to all members involved in the singing competition, as well as a showcase of the members’ talent during a karaoke singing session.
Meanwhile, the chairlady of Kapit Music Society Chua Bee Hung who also spoke at the function called on members to always work as a team.
“Unity makes us strong and we would be able to overcome the challenges even though we are facing financial and manpower problems.
“This proves that nothing is impossible when members work together as a team,” she said.
She recalled that at the previous annual general meeting for the election of new committee members, the statement of account then was only a few ringgit.
“However with great determination and extraordinary teamwork, we managed to overcome all the hurdles to run the society smoothly. All our planned activities were carried out smoothly. The success goes to all hardworking members who sacrificed their time, energy and money for the sake of this society.”
She pointed out that the main purpose of the Kapit Music Society was to organise singing competitions to unearth young talents in singing and raise the standard of singing among the members.
She also announced that Kapit Music Society would be organising the Secondary and Primary School Students’ Mandarin Singing Competitions on March 23 to select the representatives to contest at state-level scheduled in Sri Aman in August.
Meanwhile the committee has appointed Liew Pek Yien as the organising chairlady of the singing competitions on March 23.
