Philimon Nuing and entourage in a bus from Sibu to Uma Kelap, Sungai Asap for its Local Agenda 21 and community service programme in Belaga district.

KAPIT: Kapit District Council (KDC) is holding its first Local Agenda (LA) 21 programme this year at an Orang Ulu settlement, Uma Kelap Sungai Asap Bakun Resettlement Scheme in Belaga district from 11-13 May.

This is also held to coincide with its Community Development programme for areas in Belaga.

This was disclosed by Walikota of Kapit District Council, Philimon Nuing to the press yesterday when leading a delegation of more than 30 councillors and council’s staff on their journey to Uma Kelap at Sungai Asap , Belaga from Sibu by bus.

According to Philimon the Local Agenda 21 is a process which facilitates sustainable development at community level. 

“It is an approach, based on participation which respects the social, cultural, economic and environmental needs of the present and future citizens of a community in all its diversity and which relates it to the regional, national and international community of which it is a part of,” he added.

He told that the LA 21 programme is a bit different from the normal civic assembly organised by other government agencies as it involves direct community participation in preserving and looking into the cleanliness of the environment.

To coincide with the programme many other activities were also carried out by the council that involves the participation of the community including the colouring contest for school children (level I and level II) , preventive fogging and a gotong royong project to clean the longhouse compound.

Meanwhile several government agencies had also been invited to conduct awareness and health talk at the function. They include the Health Department and the Natural Resources and Environmental Board (NREB) as well as KDC.

The function also includes a handicraft (beadwork) making competition under the council’s community service programme that will see the participation of some 150 women folks from all the 15 longhouses in Sungai Asap.

Member of Parliament for Hulu Rajang , Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong is expected to officiate at the function. Also expected to be present are an assistant minister and state assemblyman for Belaga Liwan Lagang, State Assemblyman for Murum, Belaga District council’s secretary, Jabang Juntan , Deputy Walikota of Kapit District Council, Lawrence Listin Baling and several councillors and sectional heads of the council.

The delegation departed Kapit early yesterday morning in an express boat to Sibu where the journey to Sungai Asap would continue by bus.
