KUCHING: The business community in Tabuan Jaya has been urged to embrace change in order to keep up with the business trends.
Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Dr Sim Kui Hian gave the advice while speaking at the Tabuan Jaya Chamber of Commerce’s 28th anniversary gala dinner held at Hoi Tin Lau Restaurant here on Sunday night.
Pointing out the Chinese government had invited Malaysian businessmen to take part in the Belt and Road Initiative, the minister suggested that the chamber of commerce to seek advice from the Consul-General of China in Kuching, Cheng Guangzhong on how to grab the business opportunities offered by the Chinese government through the Road and Belt Initiative.
Dr Sim, who is also the president of the Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP), also called upon Sarawakians to stay united to safeguard the state.
“Sarawak needs to be stronger and wealthier so that it can speak with a more powerful voice without fear and not be bullied by outsiders,” he added.
During the function, the chamber also held its installation ceremony for the new batch of office-bearers, with the oath-taking led by its president Lim Swee Chiaw and witnessed by Dr Sim and the honorary advisor of the chamber and former Stampin MP Datuk Yong Khoon Seng.
These were followed by a cake-cutting ceremony to commemorate its 28th anniversary.
The chamber also presented a long service award and certificate of appointment as honorary president to its founding president Datuk Seri Pui Sin Ming.
The organising committee also took the opportunity to celebrate the 75th birthday of Pui during the function.
