KUCHING: Malaysians are urged to continue supporting the tourism sector.

In saying this, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said her ministry is going to prepare for the possibilities of the economic slowdown in Malaysia, in the coming new year of 2023.

“We understand that this is global, it doesn’t involve Malaysia only.

“That’s why we as the ministry want to make sure that the people continue to support local tourism, as we are not just wanting to reboot the economy, but also to strengthen it as well,” she said.

She also added that she wanted the tourism activities, in Sarawak notably, to be as attractive as possible.

“Especially the people in the rural areas, where there are a lot of activities that can be monetised and thus would be able to generate more income onwards,” she added.

She said this during interview session with some of the reporters on the recent issues regarding Muslim-friendly longhouse at AOK Records today.

Nancy also stressed that she wanted her constituency to be able to generate income through other efforts such as gastronomy and creative arts.

“That being said, we in the tourism sector must ensure that our people are prepared for tourism sector, and we also want our tourists to spend more of their money in our country,” she added.

Earlier, Minister of Finance Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said that the country must be prepared not just for the possibilities of the economic slowdowns next year, but also to mitigate it as well.

“2023 will be a challenging year for us. What is happening in the US, China and Europe will have a much significant impact on the global economy, including Malaysia.

He also added that the forthcoming Budget 2023 will need to include measures to help mitigate the coming slowdown in the global economy.
