KUCHING: People have been advised to continue practising preventive measures against the spread of Covid-19, especially during the transition period to the endemic phase.

Public Health, Housing, and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Dr Sim Kui Hian said it is essential for everyone to acknowledge the fact that Covid-19 is still around.

“Therefore, each individual must take responsibility in taking preventive measures by taking care of oneself, including getting the Covid-19 vaccine and using face masks,” he said.

“However, it is disheartening that many people have stopped practising hand hygiene habits as if the pandemic has completely disappeared,” he added.

He said this to reporters after officiating at the State-level World Blood Donation Day and 75th anniversary of the Malaysian Red Crescent Society here, today (June 25)

Health Minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa recently announced that the decision on whether the country will transition to the endemic phase of Covid-19 will be made after it is presented in the upcoming Cabinet meeting.

She stated that if the Cabinet approves the proposal, she will announce the relevant decisions, including new standard operating procedures (SOPs).

Dr Sim, who is also adviser to the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) said he personally feels the state has already transitioned to the endemic phase.

“However, currently, it is possibly due to the fact that Covid-19 still exists, which is why they refer to it as endemic,” he said.

In relation to this, he urged the community, especially in Sarawak, to continue practising good hygiene.

“Regardless of whether it is endemic or not, what is important is that we care about the community, and if you care about yourself, these measures need to be taken,” he said.
