KUCHING: The public and local governments need to work together in keeping the environment of Kuching City clean, said Datuk Abdul Rahman Junaidi.

The Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication urged all parties, regardless of where they are, to therefore come together to make sure the city is clean at all times.

He added that the responsibility of keeping the city clean not only falls under the city and municipal councils but is also a responsibility of the community.

“We cannot expect the local councils to ensure Kuching City is clean, the community also needs to work together with councils as it is their responsibility as Kuchingites.

“Keeping the city clean means that we can live in a peaceful, harmonious, safe and clean environment, that is important,” said Abdul Rahman.

He said this at the Kuching Old City Plogging Walk in conjunction with the closing ceremony of The Kuching City Cleanliness Month at the Go Down Amphitheater, Kuching Waterfront, yesterday (July 31).

He expressed confidence that the cleanliness month organised by Kuching North City Hall (DBKU) can reflect the willingness of all parties to bear shared responsibility to keep the city clean.

The campaign was a collaboration between DBKU, Kuching South City Council (MBKS) and Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).

On top of that, Abdul Rahman hoped that the involvement of the people will improve the cleanliness of the city environment.

“Through this campaign, let us all come together as one for cleanliness is one of the characteristics as citizens, as Kuchingites and as a state,” he added.

Meanwhile, prizes were presented to the winners of the “New Things from Old” competition and Kuching City Cleanliness Month Logo Design competition, which were held online.

DBKU Mayor Datuk Junaidi Reduan, MBKS Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng and his deputy mayor Hilmy Othman, MPP Chairman Lo Khere Chiang and his deputy chairman Senator Datuk Ahmad Ibrahim were present at the ceremony.
