Designer Keith Sim showcased his demi-couture collection at Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) 2024 and in Kuching with Malaysia Nail Technicians & Makeup Artist Association Sarawak. His “Garden of Eden” theme explored mythological narratives, blending modern design with storytelling, highlighted by top-tier hair and makeup artistry.

Elegance, Mythology Combined

This designer from Kuching, known for his label KEITHSIM, is bold enough to create modern fashion that bridges the gap between high fashion and ready-to-wear.

His Transformative Demi Couture Collection was showcased on August 3 at Kuala Lumpur Fashion Week (KLFW) 2024, held at the KLCC Esplanade. Additionally, his Exclusive Show in Kuching, in collaboration with Malaysia Nail Technicians & Makeup Artist Association (MNTA) Sarawak, was presented by local models on August 30.

If you are wondering what demi-couture is, it refers to expertly crafted garments made using the principles of couture but sold in a ready-to-wear manner. While still upholding the spirit of couture and targeting a broader market, many young designers are gaining similar popularity.

“Demi-couture is kind of this intermediary space,” said Keith Sim, adding that couture is not just about craftsmanship.

For him, it involves considering every detail and building a relationship with the client, who falls in love with and appreciates the uniqueness of each piece.

His fashion show at KLFW 2024 featured a mythological theme. The “Garden of Eden” collection explored both the serene and enigmatic aspects of the Eden story, with a special focus on the often-overlooked figure of Lilith.

The legend of Lilith, which developed extensively during the Middle Ages, describes how Lilith left Adam after refusing to be subservient to him.

Sim’s “Garden of Eden” show at KLFW included a mystical introduction enhanced by runway music composed by multi-instrumentalist, music composer, singer, and DJ Belle Sisoski.

KEITHSIM’s demi-couture collection brought to life themes of creation, exile, and feminine strength through a blend of modern design and timeless elegance.

It highlighted luxurious textiles and intricate draping that evoked the tranquil and mystical beauty of Eden. The elegant tailoring featured refined cuts and fluid silhouettes that embodied the grace and innovation of demi-couture.

Among the models on the KLFW 2024 runway were Miss Universe Malaysia 2020 Francisca Luhong James, Kelly Ng, Mandy Lai, and Emily Rachel, all from Kuching.

In addition, the KEITHSIM collection showcased on August 30, in an exclusive fashion show in Kuching, was held at Cha Bo, a stylish eatery and watering hole.

The exceptional hair, makeup, and nails provided by MNTA Sarawak added an extra layer of creativity and cohesion to the show, reflecting the collection’s narrative and visual aesthetic.

The Kuala Lumpur show featured a runway where all fashion presentations were timed to avoid overlap and were executed professionally.

The Kuching show, being the only show that evening, allowed for more relaxed changes. The catwalk choreography by Yacutha was more theatrical, and the lighting brought each performance to life, setting the mood and creating an atmosphere suited to a fun crowd eager to enjoy the drama of the show.

Sarawak’s rising singing star, CWOLA, performed her number “Natural Woman”.

For the opening of the show in Kuching, ballerinas Annalisa and Alaena dazzled the audience with their movements, which were choreographed by La Danse Studio. Their costumes were designed by KEITHSIM.

“With our theme of ‘The Garden of Eden’, we are combining rich storytelling with demi-couture sophistication,” said Sim.

“Our collaboration with top hair and makeup artists in Kuching helps to elevate the collection, offering a complete and immersive experience that brings the mythological narrative to life.”

Both the Kuala Lumpur and Kuching events provided unique platforms to showcase his brand through creative partnerships.
