KUCHING: Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Open received a courtesy call from the Federation of Sarawak Journalists Association (FSJA) led by president Jacqueline Nur Atiqah at Wisma Bapa Malaysia on Tuesday (Sept 7).

The purpose of the courtesy call was to invite the chief minister to grace the 40th anniversary of Kenyalang Journalism Award (KJA) event scheduled for December 4 this year.

“However, if the Covid-19 situation does not permit a physical event, this year’s KJA will be held virtually,” said Jacqueline.

During the visit, Abang Johari presented the state government’s contribution of RM100,000 to FSJA, the organiser of Kenyalang Journalism Award (KJA).

“The state government had always been the main sponsor for prestigious events hosted by the media fraternity in Sarawak including this year’s KJA,” said Jacqueline.

She further revealed that besides the state government which was the main sponsor, there were three other KJA sponsors, namely, Petronas, Sarawak Energy Berhad and Shell which had each contributed RM50,000 to the event.

According to her, this year’s KJA categories are the Chief Minister’s Award; Journalism Award (feature and news feature); News Reporting Award; Sports Reporting Award; Broadcast Journalism Award; Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) Sustainability Journalism Award; Shell Business and Economic Journalism Award; Petronas Community Well-Being Journalism Award; PhotoJournalism Award; Photo Essay Award and Digital Economy Journalism Award.

“With this, there are more than RM231,000 in cash prizes for the winners this year. In line with this, we would like to thank the Malaysian Press Institute (MPI) for being the Panel of Judges for the KJA 2021.

“Last year’s KJA saw a total of 780 entries which was the highest record so far. The KJA Committee hopes to see the number of entries for this year’s KJA surpass this previous record.

“Hence, the committee has decided to extend the closing date for submissions for the KJA 2021 to Sept 15,” she explained.
