ASAJAYA: A surau costing RM750,000 is expected to be built within 12 months at Kampung Serpan Ulu here.
Work is set to commence this month after the Public Works Department (JKR) handed over the project site to the contractor on Aug 1.
“Once completed, the new surau is able to accommodate as many as 150 people at a time, and among the facilities are the management office, ablution place, parking spaces for cars and motorcycles.
“The compound area can also be used for community activities as well,” said Asajaya assemblyman Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
He said although Sarawak JKR had estimated the construction cost to be RM850,000, the appointed contractor had given a lower figure.
“This has saved us a lot of money and once completed, the surau will serve the local community well,” he said during the handover ceremony of the project on Saturday (Aug 1).
Also present during the ceremony was Kota Samarahan MP Rubiah Wang.
Earlier, Abdul Karim was invited by residents of Kampung Tambirat, Kampung Sambir and Kampung Serpan Ulu to grace the handover of Qurban meat in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidiladha celebration here.
A total of 30 cows were slaughtered in this year’s programme, with Kampung Sambir registering the highest number of cows (eight) donated by villagers and other individuals.
