KUCHING: The Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (KGBS) believes that Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who is an experienced leader, should continue to hold the education minister portfolio permanently.
The Prime Minister is currently serving as interim education minister after Dr Maszlee Malik resigned from the position on Jan 3.
KGBS president Ahmad Malie said that the union would wholeheartedly welcome the decision.
“KGBS assures a hundred per cent support if Tun (Dr Mahathir) continues to administer the portfolio permanently,” he said in a statement, yesterday.
He explained that the union had decided to put their trust in Dr Mahathir to lead the education ministry (MOE) given his vast experiences.
“As we all know, Tun held the portfolio before becoming the fourth prime minister.
“During that time, he transformed the country’s education arena through the 1979 Cabinet Committee Report which was aimed at strengthening policies and the country’s education system.
“He had successfully changed the education landscape of the country to this day,” he said.
Ahmad added that even though Dr Mahathir’s position is only provisional, with his experiences as the country’s top leader, KGBS was confident that MOE would be in good hands.
