SEBUYAU: The king tide caused areas around Sebuyau town to be severely flooded last Sunday (Oct 18).

However, according to a spokesperson from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) operations centre, no temporary flood evacuation centre had been opened yet.

“Currently, the department has instructed all fire and rescue stations, including auxiliary firefighters throughout the state, to monitor the flood situation this season.”

Meanwhile, a report from the Sarawak Public Communications Unit (Ukas) revealed that some parts of the town were covered in floodwaters as high as 6.5 feet as of 5.30pm on Sunday.

It was understood that flash floods due strong winds caused the water level to rise rapidly.

As a result, heavy river currents broke the coastal fortification along the Sebuyau river and caused several houses in the nearby area to be damaged.

“Among the areas most affected are Giat Mara Batang Lupar, Kampung Baru Sebuyau, Kampung Hilir Sebuyau, Pekan Sebuyau, Kampung Hulu, Kampung Seberang, Kampung Bajong, Kampung Tungkah and low-lying areas.
