MIRI: The post-independence generation should treasure and value the struggles of the past generation under the British colonial government. Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau said it is important for the post-independence generation to know the hardship of the past generation to be able to appreciate their struggles.

He said the young generation also needs to know the important dates in the nation’s history and not be confused by why certain celebrations are being observed on certain dates.

“You need to know what and why Aug 31 (1957), July 22 (1963) and Sept 16 (1963). It’s not just about hoisting flags and singing anthems. We must learn their significance,” Dennis said at the closing of ‘SMK Merbau Miri Independence and Humanity Carnival 2019’ yesterday. SMK Merbau has close to 3,000 students. At the event, Dennis pledged RM10,000 from his minor rural project (MRP) fund to the school’s Parents Teachers Association (PTA).
