KUCHING: OCIM Sdn Bhd, a company from South Korea based in Samalaju Industrial Park has expressed their interest to be on board with the Sarawak government in realising the green energy exploration initiative.
In making this statement, its president and chief executive officer Steve Choi said this is in line with their business prospects in Sarawak in the context of green energy and the semiconductor value chain.
“In the context of green energy, OCIM Sdn Bhd has produced materials such as ‘silicon metal’ (Mg-Si) for PMB Technology and also ‘Polysilicon’ for OCI. Other materials such as ‘wafers’, solar and ‘module’ for the needs of the LONGi company as well as solar installation were also produced.
“OCIM Sdn Bhd is also involved in producing designs, ‘wafers’ and chips for some leading companies in South Korea including Samsung and SK as well as providing a foundry for XFAB in Sarawak.”
He made these remarks during his courtesy call on the Deputy Minister of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Dr Hazland Abang Hipni at his office recently. Also accompanying Choi was OCIM Sdn Bhd business management department manager Ngu Siew Yen.
Choi said from 2017 to 2022, the company has been focusing on the green energy business when it made an investment of RM2.2 billion and established a research and development (R&D) centre in Miri in collaboration with Curtin University.
Starting in 2023, he disclosed that OCIM Sdn Bhd will also continue to invest in ‘Polysilicon’ by launching the semiconductor value chain and strengthening the solar value chain in Sarawak.
In strengthening the role of OCIM Sdn Bhd in Sarawak, he said the company will continue to increase its number of employees to 1,900 people in the coming years compared to 650 people in 2021 giving priority to residents and experts in Sarawak.
