KUCHING: Senior citizens are the bedrock of the communities, having dedicated themselves to the advancement and prosperity of our nation in the past, says Wilfred Yap.
The Kota Sentosa assemblyman added that it is only fitting that “we recognise and appreciate their historical contributions to our society.”
He highlighted that the past contributions of senior citizens can be recognised through policies and greater allocation for elderly care and providing services that support their families and communities to care and protect them.
“This is important as Sarawak is expected to become an ageing society by 2028.”
He said this during his visit to the Lions Nursing Home in Jalan Stutong Baru here with the Youth Section of Shiang Fatt Tng Benevolent Society Sarawak on Tuesday (Oct 3).
The group spent quality time with the 60 senior residents and shared festive happiness and joy in conjunction with the Mooncake Festival celebration.
“It is encouraging that the youth section of the association has taken the initiative to organise the event as it is important to create awareness amongst the younger generation that we must care for our older citizens and ensure that they remain safe and well looked after in their twilight years,” Yap stressed.
During the visit, various festive goodies and mooncake were distributed. Free haircuts were also provided by the youth members.
