KUCHING: The city of Kuching will be celebrating its 34th anniversary as a city on Monday (Aug 1).
Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian said Kuching was officially declared a city on Aug 1, 1988.
“For Sarawak and for Kuching, it is unique because we have Kuching City North and Kuching City South.
“But every year, on Kuching City Day, which is on Aug 1, both councils come together and they take turns to celebrate Kuching as a city day,” he said in a video posted on his Facebook yesterday.
Dr Sim, who is also Minister of Public Health, Housing, and Local Government said this is in line with Sarawak’s unity, and that is why Kuching is also known as the City of Unity.
Kuching City which is the capital of Sarawak has a population of more than 700,000 citizens comprising Malays, Chinese, Bidayuh, Iban, Melanau and other indigenous people.
To commemorate the day, normally the two administrative bodies, Kuching City South Council (MBKS) and Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) will take turns to host Kuching City Day.
There will be various programmes and activities, one of them being the Kuching Festival and Food Fair.
