KUCHING: Police here have arrested 30 individuals for various offences in the recently concluded operations codenamed 前ps Ambang Tahun Baru・and 前ps Mabuk・on New Year痴 Eve.

The operations, involving 14 police officers and 129 members from various divisions and police stations under the Kuching district police headquarters (IPD), were held from 9pm on Dec 31 until 5am on Jan 1.

Kuching deputy police chief Supt Merbin Lisa stated that a total of 483 individuals and 371 vehicles were inspected in the ‘Ops Ambang Tahun Baru’ conducted around the city.

“The eight-hour operation has resulted in the successful arrests of 16 individuals under Section 379A of the Penal Code for two cases of vehicle theft.

“As for drug offences, the police have made eight arrests under Section 15 (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for testing positive for drugs, and three arrests under Section 12 (2) of the same Act for possessing syabu.

“Three plastic packets containing a crystalline substance believed to be syabu with an estimated weight of 1.77g were seized as evidence,” he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, for ‘Ops Mabuk’ held at Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho, the Kuching traffic police had inspected 92 vehicles comprising 38 motorcycles, 45 cars, and nine vans.

Supt Merbin stated that the operation resulted in the arrests of three motorists after evidential breath analyzer (EBA) tests found them positive with alcohol. They are being investigated under Section 45A (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for drink driving.

He stated that the police also issued 17 traffic summonses against motorists for various offences in the operation.

Both operations were held to prevent any criminal incidents from happening and maintain public safety in conjunction with the new year.
