KUCHING: Firefly is planning to launch two new routes for Sarawak which are Kuching-Miri and Kuching-Kota Kinabalu starting in the second quarter next year.
This was conveyed by its chief executive officer (CEO), Philip See, to the state Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin after chairing a meeting at his office in Kuching today.
The Group chief operating officer (COO) of Malaysia Airlines Berhad Ahmad Luqman Mohd Azmi also attended the meeting.
In a press statement, See hoped with the additional airline operating the routes would create choices of flights with reasonable fares as well as attract more passengers to travel within Sarawak, and to and from the state.
In the meeting, the minister also suggested that Firefly launch the Penang-Miri flight as the route was operated by another airline a few years ago.
Aside from the new routes, Lee wanted Firefly to include Sarawak in their future domestic and international routes expansion plan while exploring potential areas of collaboration with local business players in the travel and leisure industry.
Currently Firefly, the low-cost arm of Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), is operating the Penang-Kuching route with the frequency of 14 flights weekly.
Also present during the meeting were the ministry’s acting permanent secretary, Julin Alen, and other officials of the state Ministry of Transport.
