KUCHING: The 22nd International Council on Monuments and Sites Triennial General Assembly 2026 (ICOMOS 2026) will take place in Kuching from October 17 to 24, marking the first-ever such event in Southeast Asia.
Tourism, Creative Industry, and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the event anticipates the attendance of over 2,000 cultural heritage experts from 130 countries.
Abdul Karim said that attendees will participate in discussions, scientific symposiums, and explore Malaysia’s rich cultural and natural heritage, especially in Sarawak.
“We expect the event to bring in an economic impact of RM16.3 million, with direct spending by delegates estimated at RM8.9 million. This should result in tax revenues of RM 984,000. Moreover, 1,301 job opportunities will be generated for the people of Kuching.
“The Sarawak government is thrilled to work with ICOMOS Malaysia. This event will offer many advantages for our state and Malaysia as a whole, including supporting our Post-COVID Development Strategy for 2030 and Malaysia’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage,” he said during a press conference at the Baitulmakmur II today.
The theme chosen for ICOMOS GA2026 is “Living Heritage: Respect – Enhance – Accept – Partnership”. It acknowledges global challenges like conflicts, disasters, and climate change. The focus will be on understanding how heritage conservation promotes respect, inclusivity, and sustainability. These principles are in line with the United Nations’ goals for sustainable development.
“We hope to understand how to grow while protecting our unique cultural assets. We want to celebrate and safeguard our heritage, aiming to make Sarawak a top choice for eco-tourism and business events in the ASEAN region,” he said.
ICOMOS Malaysia, Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak), and the Malaysian Convention and Exhibition Bureau secured the event with the backing of the Sarawak Museum Department last year.
