KUCHING: After being in the police force for 38 years 10 months, it was a bittersweet moment for ACP Ng Ah Lek, who is moving on to a new chapter in his life.
ACP Ng is retiring from his post as Kuching district police chief, and he said he was happy and sad at the same time – happy to leave the stress behind but sad to leave the force, which had been like his family all this time.
He was overcome with emotions when he gave his farewell speech to his comrades during the handing over of duty to his deputy Supt Ismail Mahmood.
The event was witnessed by State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) head SAC Dennis Leong at the Simpang Tiga police headquarters here.
Ng said when he woke up early Thursday, he was surprised that life had gone by in a blink of an eye, “Tomorrow (Friday) I will be an expired policeman but life goes on.”
Expressing his gladness that he went into the police force, he said when he was at St Joseph School, he was one of the bad hats there as he fought a lot. “If not, I may be a businessman or ended up being a gang leader,” he joked to the laughter of his men.
Thanking SAC Leong for giving him a lot of moral support during his tenure, ACP Ng said being in the force was an experience he would never forget.
He said he learnt about discipline, commitment, integrity, leadership and loyalty.
“It is an honourable career which I have never regretted. My two deputies, Supt Naazron Abdul Yusof and Supt Ismail Mahmood did not fail me as we were on the same wavelength,” he added.
ACP Ng started his career as an inspector and worked in Sibu, Kuching and the headquarters as CID.
He was also posted to Serian, Terengganu, Bau as CID head and then as officer in charge of court in Kuching.
Then he was seconded to the Ministry of Local Government and transferred to Bukit Aman for two years.
He returned as Saratok district police chief with the rank of DSP, Padawan district police chief with rank of Supt and then Kuching district police chief for a year.
He will now go into the legal practice and is chambering with a local legal firm.
Supt Ismail, in his brief address, called on his men to work with him as a team to bring down the crime rate in Kuching.
