Kuchingites win Quran recital competition

MIRI: Hadi Mohd Sharkawi and Nur Sakura Mohamad Musa, both from Kuching, were announced as the top Qari and Qariah respectively in the state-level Quran recital competition held on Thursday night.

Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud presented each of them the main prize which comprised of RM10,000 cash, a trophy, an Umrah package and a certificate.

The first runner-up for the men’s category (qari) went to Mohd Safwan Mahli from Kuching while the women’s category (qariah) was won by Roziah Ayup from Mukah.

They each received cash worth RM7,000 and a certificate.

Meanwhile, two Mirians, Hamim Mohd Syahib won the second runner-up for the qari category and Fara Liza Mohammad Musa the qariah category. They each received RM5,000 and a certificate.

The four-day Quran recital competition, which concluded on Thursday night, was held at Miri Civic Centre.

A total 22 participants (11 qari and 11 qariah) took part in the event.

The competition head judge Shahibul Fadhilah Datuk Mustapa Kamal Ahmad Fauzi revealed that this year’s overall performances showed a decline by 0.35 points compared to the previous year.

“This year (2020), the overall points scored are 82.55, compared to 82.90 in 2019,” he said.

He hoped that participants could improve their Quran reading skills.

Also in attendance were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan; Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister’s Department (Islamic Affairs and DBKU) Datuk Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi; Women, Family and Childhood Development Assistant Minister Rosey Yunus; and Sarawak Islamic Council president Datuk Misnu Taha.
