KUCHING: Kuching Unity Dance Association (KUDA), a newly formed dance association, has been lauded for their commitment in promoting cultural heritage and fostering a deep appreciation for the art of dance within the community.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the association’s efforts in providing a platform for local artists and encouraging creative exchange are vital for the growth and development of the performing arts in Sarawak.
“It is through such initiatives that we can nurture the next generation of artists and performers, equipping them with the skills and opportunities to shine on both local and international stages,” he said.
He said in this in his text-of-speech read by Political Secretary to the Premier Kho Teck Wan during a dance production entitled ‘Hijauan’ held at the Batu Lintang Teachers’ Training Institute’s Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce (TAZA) Auditorium last night (July 27).
Dr Sim said the tourism industry supporting the performing arts is not just about entertainment but also about nurturing a vibrant cultural ecosystem that attracts visitors and enriches the lives of residents.
“By grooming the performing arts, we can showcase the uniqueness of Sarawak to the world, drawing tourists who seek authentic cultural experiences.
“This, in turn, contributes to the economic development of our state and enhances our cultural tourism offerings,” he said.
He also expressed his appreciation to KUDA and Dua Space Dance Theatre for making the event possible as it underscores the importance of collaboration and cultural exchange.
The dance production of international standard, was choreographed by renowned Malaysian choreographer Anthony Meh, and featured talented dancers of Dua Space Dance Theatre from Kuala Lumpur.
It is a showcase of different Malaysian ethnic groups with their distinctive and unique cultural attributions through poetic and narrative.
Earlier, KUDA president Chan Lay Na said the performance is not just a showcase of dance but a celebration of the country’s rich cultural heritage and the unity it brings.
“The performers tonight have graced stages worldwide, including China, Taiwan, the US, and more. This production of ‘Hijauan’ has received numerous accolades from international audiences.
“With ‘Hijauan’, we hope to reach out to artists and art lovers, especially dancers from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and genres,” she said.
She also hoped to unite dance lovers through activities of the arts and to bring together dancers of different genres and backgrounds, moving forward as one.
“We want to put Sarawak on the world map as a hub of internationally recognised dance talent,” said Chan.
