SIBU: Deputy Speaker of Dewan Rakyat and Lanang MP Alice Lau Kiong Yieng yesterday paid inaugural visit to the headquarters of Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) Sibu Branch in Jalan Awang Ramli Amit and chipped in for its annual flag sales.
Upon arrival, she was warmly welcomed by the chairman of MRCS Sibu branch Penghulu Chua Hiong Kee and his committee members.
During the visit, Lau also took the opportunity to greet the members from Sibu Automobile Repairers Association (SARA) led by its chairman Councillor Teo Nging Poh who made their mass blood donation simultaneously at the place.
Meanwhile, Lau has pledged to make contribution of RM20,000 from special fund in her position as deputy Speaker of Dewan Rakyat to the MRCS Sibu Branch for their running activities.
“For the MRCS, we all know during our school times on its flag sales. In my alma mater we also have MRCS activities so are in many other schools I suppose though I did not join anyway.
“Since young I have seen on and off on this MRCS flag sales. I think everybody knows about it…but not many people know what it is all about.
“When we see the ‘Bulan Sabit Merah’ (MRCS), it tells us all it is about helping charity, emergency and learning how to save people in emergency situation. The only thing people do not know is MRCS is a non-governmental organisation,” she said.
Thus, MRCS needs to raise fund such as selling flags for their activities, she said, while urging members of the public to come forward to help in whatever they could.
Chua expressed his gratitude to Lau for her strong support rendered to MRCS Sibu Branch.
