KUCHING: The Land and Survey Department (JTS) has to review its policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to remain relevant. State Secretary Datuk Sri Abu Bakar Marzuki said there are processes and related matters that are no longer suitable under present conditions.

“There are policies set in the 70s that are no longer suitable for the current situation and need to be reviewed.

“If they are no longer suitable in the modern day, they need to be improved so we can ensure that all the proposals and plans that we want to implement in Sarawak are relevant and achievable,” he said at the JTS Innovative and Integrity Day here, yesterday (Sept 14).

He civil servants need to have a high spirit of competence to ensure that they are able to face challenges in the future.

And a good work attitude will make them more competitive globally.

“We also need to practice good ethics when carrying out our responsibilities as employees, regardless of the positions that you are in.

“Integrity, the mother of all values, needs to be practiced, along with sincerity, honesty and trust when carrying out a task,” he said.

He added that innovation is also important and needs to be practised to continuously improve the effectiveness of the delivery of the servicing system.

“Therefore, it is important for a department to benchmark against the best practices at state, national and international levels, to compete to be one of the best in the world.

“Relevant parties also need to find initiatives to improve staff skills in line with current developments,” he said.

He said the staff need to contribute energy and skills in their respective fields to achieve the desired progress, thus achieving the vision of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg to become a developed country.

Among those present was JTS director Datuk Abdullah Julaihi.
