LAWAS: Torrential rainfall last night (Dec 8) triggered a landslide, severing transportation routes to and from Lawas, impacting several villages and around 5,000 residents
A Political Secretary to the Premier, Sam Laya, who was present at the landslide area, said the villages affected include Long Sukang, Long Luping, Long Semadoh, and Ba’kelalan.
“Landslides happen quite often especially during rainy seasons, it really depends on the weather.
“Therefore, when these landslides happen, it would normally take one day for road repair works to complete. If it rains, then it would take two to three days to repair the roads,” he told reporters when met at the landslide site on Saturday (Dec 9).
Sam explained that current conditions have compelled road users to park their vehicles at the landslide’s edge, necessitating a trek across, followed by pick-up by another vehicle on the other side.
He also disclosed that contractors are actively engaged in land-clearing efforts, addressing the extensive soil movement resulting from the landslide.
“I hope the repair works would run smoothly and once completed there would not be further problems.
“I also urged the road users to prioritise safety and be careful especially when it is December, approaching rainy seasons,” he added.
The landslide happened along the Sabah-Sarawak Link Road (SSLR) project, at KM29, 13 kilometres to Long Sukang.
