KUCHING: Julau MP Larry Sng has stepped down as Sarawak PKR chairman, after only nine months at the helm.

He said the decision was in the best interest of the party.

“After much consideration, I have decided that it is in the best interest for Sarawak PKR to be led by a Dayak leader going into the Sarawak polls,” he said on his Facebook page.

Sng, 41, was appointed Sarawak PKR chairman after Selangau MP Baru Bian quit the party on March 12.

PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail had said Sng’s appointment was agreed upon following discussions and negotiations between party president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sarawak PKR division chiefs.

Sng joined PKR shortly after winning the Julau parliamentary seat on an independent ticket in the 2018 general elections.

In his Facebook page, he said Dayaks were under-represented in the top leadership roles in both government and opposition parties.

He said most, if not all, of the political parties in the state were being led by either Malays or Chinese, despite being largely supported by Dayaks.

“I believe that by making this change within Sarawak PKR’s leadership, it would augur well and lend the party more credibility in its fight against economic inequalities in the private sector, inequalities in selection and promotion in the public service and our resolve in addressing native customary land issues.

“Even though I am elected in a predominantly Dayak parliamentary seat and have had experience also in state administration, I am confident that the party will find a good replacement.”

He added that he would discuss with the party president in the coming days about this transition and the selection of his replacement.
