KUCHING: Local authorities (LAs) do not have the authority to build any public facilities on a privately-owned property or area.

Petra Jaya parliamentary candidate Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof clarified this matter during his walkabout with Assistant Minister of Law, State-Federal Relations and Project Monitoring Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali, after receiving complaints from the villagers in Kampung Astana Lot in Petra Jaya.

He said that the villagers complained about the drainage system in their housing compounds which did not channel the water flow properly to the river during rainy season.

“They are asking for the authorities’ help to build the drainage system, but the LAs do not have any jurisdiction to construct any drainage in a private property.

“They (LAs) can only build in public areas, meaning under their jurisdiction,” said Fadillah.

He told this when speaking to reporters after the walkabout in Kampung Astana Lot, in Petra Jaya yesterday.

On another matter, Fadillah also meet with one of the villagers, a police pensioner, who requested for help in finding them a land to build their house.

Fadillah said that he will look into the matter, as the villagers are currently renting from one place to another.
